Create and verify a transparent PNG with LayerDiffuse in Forge

Install the official separate extension, match its SDXL or SD1.5 method, generate one clean candidate, then prove that the downloaded PNG contains usable alpha—not a baked checkerboard.

01 · Direct answer

A checkerboard is a preview convention, not an alpha test

The job finishes only after the downloaded file is independently composited.

01Install separately

Announcement #854 links sd-forge-layerdiffuse. Current Forge core does not make it a built-in feature.

02Match the family

The inspected dropdown contains SDXL and SD1.5 methods. A checkpoint name alone does not expand that support boundary.

03Generate one route

Start with Attention Injection, one image and no unrelated extension or second pass.

04Download the PNG

The decoder intends to return an RGBA candidate and a separate visualization. Do not screenshot the gallery.

05Prove alpha

Inspect channels, then composite over white, black and a saturated color. Check internal translucency as well as outer edges.

STALE SNAPSHOT

The extension repository describes itself as WIP and its latest inspected commit is b1e6651 from 30 August 2024. Open saving reports continued after that date. Compatibility must be tested against both recorded commits.

02 · Route selector

Choose the layer job before choosing a method

Each route expects different inputs and a different proof of completion.

VERIFIEDSDXL or SD1.5

Only Generate Transparent Image (Attention Injection)

Input contract
Prompt only. Start without Hires. fix, LoRAs, ControlNet or another post-processor.
Expected output
A decoded RGBA candidate plus a checkerboard visualization. Download and inspect the candidate itself.
Done when
The PNG has an alpha channel and survives light, dark and saturated-background composites.
03 · Clean baseline

Prove one alpha path before adding layers or post-processing

This sequence preserves the first point of failure.

  1. 01

    Record both commits

Save the original Forge commit and the separate LayerDiffuse extension commit. “Latest” is not a reproducible environment.

  2. 02

    Prove Forge without the extension

Generate one ordinary image with the target checkpoint. This separates a model-load failure from a LayerDiffuse failure.

  3. 03

    Install the linked repository

Use the repository linked by the official Forge announcement. Apply the extension change, restart the UI and confirm the LayerDiffuse accordion appears.

  4. 04

    Match family and method

Choose a method explicitly labelled SDXL for an SDXL checkpoint or SD1.5 for an SD1.5 checkpoint. Do not infer support for FLUX, SD3.5 or another family.

  5. 05

    Run the smallest direct job

Enable LayerDiffuse and generate one image with the direct transparent-image method. Leave Weight and Stop At at their displayed 1.0 values for the first proof.

  6. 06

Let the selected method fetch its files

The code downloads required files to models/layer_model. Watch the console and do not download every 12.54 GB repository file for a one-method test.

  7. 07

    Download the actual candidate

Do not save a screenshot and do not assume a checkerboard visualization contains alpha. Download the candidate output as PNG.

  8. 08

    Prove the alpha channel

Inspect RGBA/channel information, then composite the file over light, dark and saturated colors. Save the receipt and only then add another workflow.

VERIFIED

Baseline done: one downloaded PNG exposes alpha and composites cleanly enough for the intended use. A successful generation message or checkerboard thumbnail alone is not the done state.

04 · Alpha proof lab

Test the same pixels against backgrounds that reveal different defects

This interactive illustration explains the audit; it is not generated benchmark output.

CSS DIAGNOSTIC ILLUSTRATION · NOT A FORGE RESULT
Checker: useful orientation, but not proof that the file contains alpha.
FILE

Confirm PNG + alpha

Use file/channel information. An RGB PNG can still display a checkerboard baked into its pixels.

LIGHT

Find dark matte edges

White and pale backgrounds expose dark contamination around hair, fur, smoke and glow.

DARK

Find light halos

Black reveals white matte, weak internal opacity and broken glass or luminous details.

COLOR

Read partial opacity

A saturated background makes semi-transparent pixels visibly mix instead of merely disappearing.

VERIFIED

Current code requests only the files a method needs

The official model repository lists 14 safetensors files and reports about 12.54 GB total storage. Direct SDXL transparency, for example, needs an injection model plus the transparent decoder—not every conditional or SD1.5 file.

Diagnose the first output that stopped matching the contract

Gallery preview, downloaded file and automatic output folder are three different checkpoints.

The LayerDiffuse accordion is missing

The current original Forge core does not provide this accordion by itself. Confirm the separate extension folder and commit, restart the UI, read the startup console and test with other third-party extensions disabled.

Inspect the evidence ↗
The first run appears stuck

The selected method can trigger automatic model downloads. Check the console, network access and models/layer_model before interrupting it. Retry one method; do not replace files with an unofficial bundle.

Inspect the evidence ↗
Only a checkerboard image is saved

A checkerboard can be the visualization rather than the RGBA output. Download each gallery candidate and inspect its alpha channel. Open reports #28, #132 and #148 show that automatic saving has varied by environment; no universal fix is verified.

Inspect the evidence ↗
The PNG is opaque or gray

Return to the direct baseline, official installation path and matching family. Test the repository sanity-check environment before changing prompts. Record whether the gallery candidate, downloaded file or only the saved output folder is affected.

Inspect the evidence ↗
Hires. fix loses transparency

Issue #119 remains an open community report. Prove the base transparent output without Hires. fix first. If exact alpha is required, keep that passing PNG and upscale in an alpha-preserving path rather than assuming the second pass is compatible.

Inspect the evidence ↗
Generation returns noise

For the two SD1.5 conditional methods, batch size must be divisible by 2. For Generate Everything Together it must be divisible by 3. The README states unmatched groups can return noise.

Inspect the evidence ↗
The method throws a LoRA-key or shape error

First verify SDXL versus SD1.5, exact checkpoint, Forge commit and extension commit. Remove unrelated extensions and reproduce once before treating the LayerDiffuse model file as corrupt.

Inspect the evidence ↗
Conditional SDXL output has artifacts

The official README records sampler-specific artifacts in its dated tests and suggests a non-DPM sampler for specific second-stage examples. Treat that as a controlled probe, not a universal sampler ranking.

Inspect the evidence ↗
A face swap or post-processor only affects the preview

Issue #50 reports a third-party result being applied to the visualization but not the alpha output. Isolate LayerDiffuse first, then add one post-processor and compare both outputs; do not assume callback order is compatible.

Inspect the evidence ↗
Edges look correct on white but fail elsewhere

That is an alpha-quality failure, not proof that PNG export failed. Composite over black and a saturated color, then inspect halos, matte contamination, hair, glass and glow at 100%.

09 · Questions

Resolve installation, alpha and layer-workflow questions

Answers separate code facts from dated demonstrations, community reports and local unknowns.

Is LayerDiffuse built into Stable Diffusion WebUI Forge?

No. The official Forge announcement links a separate sd-forge-layerdiffuse repository. The current original Forge core and the extension must be versioned independently.

Where do I install LayerDiffuse in Forge?

Use the repository linked by announcement #854 through Forge’s extension installation flow, then apply the change and restart. Do not use a fork bundle or relabelled binary as an official download.

Where is the LayerDiffuse panel?

The extension code registers an always-visible LayerDiffuse accordion for Txt2img and Img2img. If it is absent after restart, inspect extension loading in the console before downloading models.

Does LayerDiffuse support both SDXL and SD1.5?

The inspected extension code exposes explicitly labelled SDXL and SD1.5 methods. Match the checkpoint family to that label; this does not prove support for every fine-tune.

Does LayerDiffuse support FLUX or SD3.5?

The inspected method list contains SDXL and SD1.5 only. Support for FLUX, SD3.5 or another family is UNKNOWN on this evidence and should not be inferred from other forks.

Which method should I use for a transparent PNG?

Start with the Attention Injection method labelled for your checkpoint family. It requires no foreground, background or blending input and exercises the shortest alpha-output path.

What is the difference between attention and conv injection?

Both inspected SDXL methods generate transparency. The README describes Conv Injection as an alternative that may preserve prompt understanding differently and may introduce stronger style influence; its own author reports better results from Attention Injection in their tests.

What does Weight do?

The extension exposes Weight from 0 to 2 in 0.001 steps and displays 1.0. It controls the loaded SDXL layer patch. Keep 1.0 for the baseline; no universal best value is claimed.

What does Stop At do?

The control runs from 0 to 1 and displays 1.0. Current code converts it into a sigma boundary, after which sampling can return to the original UNet. Treat changes as a controlled experiment.

Where are LayerDiffuse model files stored?

Current extension code creates models/layer_model under Forge’s active models path and downloads the file required by the selected method there.

Do I need to download every LayerDiffuse model?

No. The README says downloads and selection are automatic, and current code requests files by method. The official model repository totals about 12.54 GB, so downloading everything is unnecessary for a one-method baseline.

Why do I see two images?

The decoder returns a real PNG candidate and a visualization. Current code assigns the PNG to the processed image and appends the visualization as an extra result. Saving behavior still needs local verification.

Does a checkerboard prove transparency?

No. A checkerboard may be baked into an ordinary RGB image. Confirm a real alpha channel and composite the downloaded PNG over several solid backgrounds.

How can I check whether a PNG really has alpha?

Open the downloaded file in an editor or inspector that shows RGBA/channels, then place it over white, black and a saturated color. A screenshot of the Forge gallery is not evidence.

Why is the transparent PNG not saved automatically?

Open issues report this in several dated environments, while the repository owner could not reproduce one report. Separate gallery output from the automatic output folder and preserve exact commits before testing any workaround.

Can I use LayerDiffuse in Img2img?

The README says Img2img is finished, current code has an Img2img initialization hook, and the official Forge announcement demonstrates transparent-image editing. Compatibility still depends on the recorded build.

Can I edit a transparent image with inpainting?

Announcement #854 demonstrates transparent inpainting and sketch-plus-Img2img. Load the real RGBA input, preserve a baseline, and verify the alpha channel after the edit rather than trusting the preview.

Can LayerDiffuse generate glass, glow or semi-transparency?

The official README presents those as the reason to use latent transparency rather than simple background removal. Output quality is probabilistic and must be checked over multiple backgrounds.

How do I add a background behind a transparent subject?

For SDXL, use the transparent foreground as input to From Foreground to Blending, then optionally use foreground plus blending to generate a background. Composite the real layers outside Forge for the final alignment proof.

How do I generate a foreground from an existing background?

SDXL uses Background to Blending followed by Background and Blending to Foreground. SD1.5 exposes a one-step From Background to Foreground method that requires batch size divisible by 2.

Why must SD1.5 batch size be 2 or 3?

The conditional methods group outputs in pairs and the joint method groups foreground, background and blend in threes. The README warns that incomplete groups can produce noise.

Can separate layer prompts stop objects leaking into the background?

The SD1.5 joint workflow exposes additional foreground, background and blending prompts. The README uses them to separate subject content from scene content; keep the global prompt and seed fixed when testing.

Does Hires. fix preserve alpha?

It is not guaranteed. An open issue reports lost transparency, and the extension repository contains dated discussion around rebuilding alpha after post-processing. Prove Hires. fix separately on your exact build.

Can I use ADetailer, ReActor or another extension with LayerDiffuse?

Compatibility is UNKNOWN until tested. Callback-order reports show that a post-processor may affect the visualization but not the alpha output. Add one extension at a time after the base PNG passes.

Which sampler is best for LayerDiffuse?

There is no universal winner. The README records DPM artifacts in some conditional SDXL tests and uses Euler A or UniPC as a dated probe. Reproduce the sanity check before generalizing.

Why does my result have a colored fringe?

The alpha may contain matte contamination or weak edge opacity even when the file is RGBA. Compare white, black and saturated composites and inspect semi-transparent edges at 100%.

Can I batch-generate transparent assets?

First prove one image and confirm which output is actually saved. Batch grouping matters for SD1.5 conditional and joint methods, and open reports show automatic alpha saving is not consistent across environments.

How do I report a LayerDiffuse bug?

Include both repository commits, environment, checkpoint family and hash, method, Weight, Stop At, complete generation receipt, input PNGs, downloaded outputs and the console traceback. State whether the gallery, download or output folder failed.

Is a background remover equivalent to LayerDiffuse?

No. A remover estimates a mask after an ordinary image exists. LayerDiffuse changes diffusion and decodes latent transparency, which can represent glass, glow and internal semi-transparency; neither guarantees perfect edges.

Is this workflow verified on a local GPU here?

No. The page verifies current source code, repository state and reports, but no GPU generation was run in this workspace. Output quality and exact runtime compatibility remain local tests.
