Inpaint in Forge without repainting the whole image

Start from a working image, mask one causal region, describe the new local truth, and compare denoising passes without changing the rest of the setup.

00 · Direct answer

A clean inpaint pass has four contracts

Inpainting succeeds when the source, region, replacement signal and proof all agree.

01 · SOURCEThe base image already works

Checkpoint, VAE and model-family setup produce a normal image before the mask is added.

02 · REGIONThe mask covers the full cause

The object, defect, shadow, contact edge or attachment that must change is inside the editable region.

03 · SIGNALPrompt and masked content agree

Original, Fill or Latent noise is chosen for the actual job—not because one tutorial used it.

04 · PROOFProtected pixels remain acceptable

The intended detail changes, the seam blends, and the saved settings reproduce the selected pass.

Page boundary

This page owns repair, removal, replacement and addition inside an existing canvas. Use img2img when the whole image should change and outpainting when the canvas should expand. Browse every workflow when the result you need is different. Use the black-output diagnostic when generation itself fails.

01 · Edit planner

Choose what must happen inside the mask

Repair, removal, replacement and addition need different source signals even though they share one tab.

CORRECT CONTRACTASSUMPTION

Keep the object and scene, but redraw a defective hand, face, edge or texture.

Mask
Cover the defect plus a narrow ring of usable context. Include the complete hand or facial feature—not isolated bad pixels.
Local prompt
Describe the corrected result and its visible role in the scene: pose, expression, material, lighting and view.
Starting content
Start with Original because the existing shape and color are useful evidence.
Done when
The defect is corrected, nearby scale and lighting still fit, and the seam disappears at normal viewing size.

ASSUMPTION These routes are editorial starting hypotheses built from current code and dated demonstrations. Prove them with your exact checkpoint.

02 · Mask geometry

Paint the effect, not only the visible mistake

The mask is a spatial instruction. It must include every pixel consequence that needs a new explanation.

TOO TIGHT

Defect pixels only

The edit has no room to rebuild the hand, attachment or contact shadow. A sharp ring often survives.

CAUSAL MASK

Object + connection + footprint

The editable region includes the form, edge transition and visual consequence that must agree.

STALE SNAPSHOT Canvas gestures and brush capabilities are documented in the owner’s July 2024 Forge Canvas announcement; browser and tablet behavior still requires testing.

03 · Clean baseline

Build one local edit before adding tools

Leave ControlNet, ADetailer, LoRAs, Soft inpainting and third-party scripts out of the first proof.

  1. 01

    Prove the source before masking

Generate or load one image whose checkpoint, VAE and model-family setup already produce a normal result. Save the untouched source outside the canvas.

  2. 02

    Open the local-edit route

Choose the selected result and send or copy it to Img2img → Inpaint. Confirm the intended image—not an older gallery item—appears on the canvas.

  3. 03

Describe only the new local truth

Keep scene words needed for continuity, but make the target explicit. For removal, describe the background; for replacement, stop naming the old object.

  4. 04

    Paint a causal mask

Cover the target and its shadow, reflection, contact point or attachment when those must change. Leave protected pixels outside the mask.

  5. 05

    Set one transparent contract

Start with Inpaint masked. Choose Original, Fill or Latent noise deliberately; choose Whole picture or Only masked deliberately; record blur and padding.

  6. 06

    Run a three-point denoising probe

Keep model, prompt, seed, mask and dimensions fixed. Compare 0.35, 0.60 and 0.85 as an editorial diagnostic ladder—not universal quality settings.

  7. 07

    Keep the smallest useful improvement

Select the run that changes enough without losing scene fit. Send that result back to Inpaint and tighten the next mask instead of demanding a final answer in one pass.

  8. 08

    Verify the protected region

Compare source and result at the mask edge and beyond it. Finish only when the intended area changed, protected content remained acceptable and the saved settings reproduce the pass.

DONE STATEThe intended local region changed, protected content stayed acceptable, the mask edge does not read as a seam, and the recorded setup reproduces the chosen pass.
04 · Current controls

Know which part of the contract each control changes

Labels and ranges below are checked against original Forge at the inspected commit.

Forge Canvas

The July 2024 owner announcement documents left-click drawing or file drag, right-click panning, mouse-wheel zoom, brush width, alpha, softness, fullscreen, mask contrast and dated Wacom pressure support. Treat hardware-specific pressure behavior as snapshot evidence, not a guarantee for every browser.

Mask mode

Inpaint masked edits the painted region. Inpaint not masked inverts that contract and edits everything outside it. The current processing code applies the inversion before blur and cropping.

Masked content: Original

The source pixels remain the initial visual signal inside the mask. Use it when pose, silhouette, color or local structure should guide the correction.

Masked content: Fill

Current code fills the masked area from surrounding image color before diffusion. It is a useful removal probe, but open reports describe washed-out or grey results in some setups.

Masked content: Latent noise / nothing

Latent noise replaces the masked latent with seeded noise; latent nothing zeros it. They reduce dependence on old content, but do not guarantee a clean object or background.

Inpaint area

Whole picture resizes the whole input to the processing size. Only masked crops around the mask, expands that crop to the requested aspect ratio, processes it at the UI width and height, then pastes it back.

Only masked padding

Padding adds surrounding context to the Only masked crop. The inspected UI range is 0–256 pixels and the displayed default is 32. Too little context can break scale; too much spends the crop on pixels that should remain unchanged.

Mask blur

The current UI exposes 0–64 with a displayed default of 4. Blur softens the transition before processing. It can hide a hard edge, but it cannot repair a wrong object, reversed mask or incompatible model setup.

Denoising strength

Current processing accepts values from 0 to 1 and records the value in generation parameters. Lower and higher are relative amounts of departure from the initial signal; the useful point depends on the task, model and masked-content choice.

Resize and dimensions

The inspected UI exposes Resize to, Resize by, width, height and auto-detect image size. Only masked uses width and height as the processing crop resolution, not as a promise that the final canvas will equal that crop.

VERIFIED

If Only masked receives a blank mask, current processing logs: Unable to perform "Inpaint Only mask" because mask is blank, switch to img2img mode.

Inspect the processing path ↗
05 · Denoising probe

Find the useful interval with three controlled runs

Do not search for a magic value. Use widely separated probes to learn whether the task needs preservation or freedom.

0.35

Preservation probe

Tests whether a light correction is enough. If nothing useful changes, that is evidence—not a reason to move four controls at once.

0.60

Middle probe

A dated Forge tutorial repeatedly used roughly this region. Treat it as a comparison point, not a recommended answer for every checkpoint.

0.85

Replacement probe

Tests whether the target needs much more freedom. Watch for a new object that no longer fits scale, lighting, identity or the mask boundary.

ASSUMPTION

Controlled comparison: same source, mask, prompt, seed, model, sampler, dimensions, Masked content, Inpaint area, blur and padding. Change only denoising strength. The 0.35 / 0.60 / 0.85 ladder is an editorial diagnostic experiment.

06 · Iteration receipt

Preserve the pass you can explain

Sending a result back to Inpaint creates a new baseline. Record what crossed that boundary.

Fix the earliest broken contract

Mask problems, model problems and output problems need different tests.

Nothing inside the mask changes

Confirm a non-blank mask exists, Mask mode is Inpaint masked, and the prompt names the desired result. Disable Soft inpainting for the baseline. A tiny mask combined with heavy blur or preservation can leave too little effective edit signal.

Inspect the dated report ↗
The whole image changes

Check for Inpaint not masked, Whole picture and an unexpectedly high denoising value. Confirm the send-to-Inpaint action did not import an old prompt, seed, size or extension state. Rebuild the pass from the saved source.

Inspect the dated report ↗
The edit is sharp but has a visible seam

Expand the mask into a consistent texture, include the complete contact edge, then compare modestly more blur or padding one at a time. A seam caused by wrong lighting or perspective needs a better local prompt or replacement—not blur alone.

The patch is blurry, grey or washed out

First run the checkpoint without inpainting. Then compare Original against Fill and inspect VAE/model-family compatibility. Open reports show that this symptom is not one universal Forge bug and can appear with different models or fill behavior.

Inspect the dated report ↗
The result is black or blank

Stop tuning the mask. Prove the base model and VAE, remove extra extensions and unsafe precision flags, then use the dedicated output-stage diagnostic.

Continue with the focused diagnostic →
A tiny face or eye has too little detail

Use Only masked so the processing dimensions are spent on the crop, add enough padding to include head pose and lighting, and mask the complete feature. Do not set an enormous blur relative to a tiny mask.

Inspect the dated report ↗
The object keeps returning after removal

Mask the object plus shadow and reflection, remove it from the prompt, and compare Fill with Latent noise. Once a plausible background appears, iterate from that result with Original and a smaller cleanup mask.

The canvas freezes or the brush behaves strangely

Save the source, retest in a current Chromium or Firefox build, disable third-party extensions, and reproduce on a clean original-Forge state. Record browser, commit, canvas size and whether the freeze begins on load, draw or pointer release.

FLUX inpainting behaves differently or fails

Do not infer universal support from a dated successful video. The current UI has FLUX img2img presets, but open reports disagree about Fill, Only masked, Hires and dedicated FLUX Fill models. Record the exact checkpoint and treat the combination as unverified.

09 · Inpainting FAQ

Questions that appear between the mask and the result

Answers keep current code facts separate from community recipes and unresolved compatibility.

Where is inpainting in Stable Diffusion WebUI Forge?

Open Img2img and choose the Inpaint tab. Current source also exposes Inpaint sketch, Inpaint upload and Batch as separate modes.

What is the difference between img2img and inpainting?

Ordinary img2img lets the whole source influence the transformation. Inpainting adds a mask so the edit contract targets the painted region or its inverse.

What is the difference between inpainting and outpainting?

Inpainting changes pixels inside the existing canvas. Outpainting enlarges the canvas and generates beyond an original edge.

Should I use Inpaint masked or Inpaint not masked?

Use Inpaint masked when the painted area should change. Use Inpaint not masked only when the painted area should be protected and everything outside it should change.

Should the inpaint mask be white or black when uploaded?

In the current Inpaint upload path, the mask is thresholded and the white region is treated as the editable region before an optional Mask mode inversion.

What does Masked content Original do?

It keeps the source as the starting visual signal inside the mask. It is the clearest first choice when the old structure is useful.

What does Masked content Fill do?

Forge fills the region from surrounding image color before diffusion. It can help removal, but it is not a semantic object eraser and may produce flat or grey starts in some reported setups.

When should I use Latent noise?

Use it as a comparison when the source structure strongly resists removal, addition or replacement. It gives diffusion a noisy starting latent inside the mask, so it usually needs more control from prompt and context.

What does Latent nothing do?

The current processing path zeros the masked part of the initial latent. It is another starting condition, not a stronger version of the prompt and not a guaranteed repair.

Should I use Whole picture or Only masked?

Use Whole picture when global scene context or a broad edit matters. Use Only masked when a small region needs more processing resolution; supply enough padding for scale, lighting and attachment context.

Why does Only masked improve small faces or hands?

The cropped mask region is resized to the processing width and height before being pasted back, so more of the diffusion budget is concentrated on that local area.

What does Only masked padding do?

It expands the crop around the mask. Padding is context, not extra editable area: too little can lose scale; too much reduces local concentration.

What Mask blur value should I use?

There is no universal number. The inspected UI starts at 4. Compare small changes around that value and inspect the edge; a very large blur can overwhelm a tiny mask.

What denoising strength should I use for inpainting?

No one value fits repair, removal, replacement and addition. Compare controlled low, middle and high probes with the same mask and seed, then narrow the interval that produces enough change without scene drift.

Why does inpainting do nothing even at high denoising?

Check for a blank or tiny effective mask, reversed Mask mode, Soft inpainting preservation, a prompt that still describes the old object, or a model/setup that also fails outside inpainting.

Why does inpainting change pixels outside the mask?

Check Mask mode, Whole picture processing, blur and overlay behavior. Some blending near the boundary is expected; broad unrelated change is a reason to rebuild a clean baseline and compare the saved source.

How do I remove an object and its shadow?

Mask both the object and shadow, remove the object from the prompt, describe the revealed background, and compare Fill against Latent noise one variable at a time.

How do I add an object to an empty area?

Mask a plausible footprint, describe placement and contact, compare Latent noise, then send the rough successful form back and refine it with a smaller mask and Original.

How do I fix hands with inpainting?

Mask the complete malformed hand plus wrist context, describe the intended gesture and view, use Only masked with enough padding for the arm direction, and expect several controlled iterations.

How do I keep the same face while changing everything else?

Mask the face and choose Inpaint not masked so the painted face is protected. Inspect the boundary carefully because hair, neck, lighting and pose cross that protection edge.

Can I upload a separate mask?

Yes. Choose Inpaint upload and provide the source image plus a mask. Keep both images the same dimensions and confirm the intended white region before generating.

Can Forge batch inpaint images?

The current batch path supports an inpaint mask directory. One mask can be reused for all images; otherwise Forge matches masks by the input filename stem and skips inputs without a match. Prove one image and mask before a folder.

Does Forge require a special inpainting checkpoint?

The core workflow can run with ordinary compatible checkpoints, as dated tutorials demonstrate. A dedicated inpainting checkpoint may behave differently; follow its publisher and base-family requirements instead of assuming a filename makes it compatible.

Does inpainting work with FLUX in original Forge?

A dated video demonstrates one FLUX NF4 workflow, but open original-Forge issues report inconsistent behavior for Fill, Only masked, Hires and FLUX Fill models. Support for an arbitrary FLUX combination is UNKNOWN.

What is Soft inpainting?

The bundled source describes mask-opacity-aware blending of original and generated content. At the inspected commit the source file exists, but an open issue reports that its UI is missing, and other reports describe inconsistent results. Treat it as optional and version-specific.

How do I make an inpainting result reproducible?

Save the source and mask; record original Forge commit, checkpoint, VAE, prompt, seed, dimensions, sampler, denoising, mask mode, masked content, inpaint area, blur, padding, extensions and the exact result selected for the next pass.
