Forge License Explained
A practical map of GNU AGPL Version 3 for people who run, modify, host or redistribute Original Forge.
You can run, change and charge. The conditions follow the delivery.
The root of the inspected Original Forge repository carries the full GNU Affero General Public License, Version 3. It permits running and modifying the program, redistribution, and charging money—but source and notice duties can arise when you distribute covered work or let users interact remotely with a modified version.
This is a source-based orientation, not legal advice. Your jurisdiction, organization, modifications, architecture and contracts can change the answer.
Start with what you actually do.
This selector narrows the license sections to read. It is not an automated legal determination.
Use an unmodified copy on your own computer.
The license explicitly affirms permission to run the unmodified program. Running it does not, by itself, require publishing your prompts, settings, models or ordinary generated images.
AGPL §2; output boundary in §2- 1Keep the license file with the installation.
- 2Check each model, LoRA and extension separately.
- 3Do not treat “local” as permission for unlawful inputs or outputs.
Change code without distributing it or serving remote users.
Section 2 permits making and running covered works you do not convey. The section 13 network condition matters when a modified version supports remote interaction with users.
AGPL §§2 and 13- 1Record every changed file and date.
- 2Keep a clean upstream reference and full build scripts.
- 3Reassess before another person or organization receives a copy or remote access.
Let users interact with your modified Forge over a network.
Section 13 says the modified version must prominently offer all remote users an opportunity to receive its Corresponding Source from a network server at no charge.
AGPL §13; GNU AGPL FAQ- 1Add a prominent source link inside the user-facing interface.
- 2Publish source matching the version actually deployed.
- 3Include required build, install and run scripts—not only a patch.
Redistribute unchanged or modified source code.
For verbatim source, preserve copyright, license and no-warranty notices and give recipients the license. Modified source adds prominent modification/date notices and AGPL licensing for the covered work as a whole.
AGPL §§4–5- 1Preserve existing notices.
- 2Ship the complete license text.
- 3Identify modifications and relevant dates prominently.
Distribute an archive, executable or other non-source form.
Section 6 requires an allowed method of providing machine-readable Corresponding Source. A binary-only mirror without the required source path is not enough.
AGPL §6- 1Inventory exactly what the package contains.
- 2Provide equivalent source access under the license.
- 3Retain third-party notices and instructions needed to install and run.
Sell copies, support or access to a Forge-based service.
The license allows charging a price for copies and offering paid support or warranty. Payment does not cancel source, notice or network-interaction duties, and it grants no rights to models or brands.
AGPL §4; GNU selling guidance- 1Map the technical delivery model first.
- 2Review model and extension commercial terms separately.
- 3Get legal review before launching a closed or hosted derivative.
Forge is one layer in the stack.
The code license does not grant a single universal license for everything visible in the UI or placed in its folders.
Forge repository code
Root LICENSE.txtRun, modify, remote access and redistribution of covered Forge code.
Borrowed and bundled code

Models, LoRAs and VAEs
Each asset’s own model card/licenseCommercial use, redistribution and acceptable-use terms must be checked per asset.

VERIFIED Counted in the clean checkout at dfdcbab. Counts describe that tree only; they are not a conclusion that every obligation was discovered.
The source link must match the running code.
GNU AGPL section 13 addresses the server gap: users of a modified network application receive a source opportunity even when no binary is handed to them.

Software permission answers only the software question. Complete the other reviews before commercial release.
Controls covered program use, modification, network interaction and distribution.
Forge output is not automatically AGPL.
Section 2 covers output only when its content constitutes a covered work. The GNU FAQ likewise explains that ordinary program output is not generally covered by the program code’s copyright.
Commercial clearance remains asset-specific.
The page has not inspected your checkpoint, LoRA, prompt inputs, depicted subject, client contract or target jurisdiction.
“Open source model” is not a sufficient record.
Save the exact model card, license version, download URL and date. A UI’s software license cannot replace them.
Version 3 is verified. The modern suffix is not.
GitHub displays AGPL-3.0, and the root file is the GNU AGPL Version 3 text. We found no separate Forge-specific SPDX declaration choosing AGPL-3.0-only or AGPL-3.0-or-later.
Printed at the top of Original Forge’s root license file.
-only vs -or-laterThe generic “How to Apply” example is not a project-specific license notice.
This distinction can matter when combining or redistributing software. Preserve the original file and ask the relevant copyright holders or qualified counsel rather than silently selecting a suffix.
License questions before you publish.
These answers state the inspected evidence and stop where an individual legal conclusion would begin.
What license does Stable Diffusion WebUI Forge use?
The inspected Original Forge root contains the full GNU Affero General Public License, Version 3, and GitHub labels the repository AGPL-3.0. This page does not apply that label to reForge, Forge Neo, models or extensions.
Is Original Forge AGPL-3.0-only or AGPL-3.0-or-later?
The inspected root begins “GNU Affero General Public License, Version 3” but has no separate Forge-specific SPDX line clearly selecting the modern `-only` or `-or-later` identifier. The generic application example mentions “or later”; that example is not itself a project-specific choice. Treat the precise variant as UNKNOWN unless the copyright holders clarify it.
Can I use Forge commercially?
The AGPL does not prohibit commercial activity and permits charging for copies and support. Your delivery method still determines source and notice duties, while model, extension, input, output and branding rights remain separate.
Can I sell images generated with Forge?
The Forge code license does not generally apply to ordinary program output merely because Forge generated it. That does not clear the image: check the model license, LoRA terms, input rights, depicted people or brands, and applicable law.
Does AGPL force my generated images to be open source?
No general rule in the inspected AGPL text does that. Section 2 says output is covered only when its content constitutes a covered work. Ordinary generated imagery is not automatically Forge source code.
Can I use Forge at work without publishing my files?
Running an unmodified local copy is expressly permitted. If your organization modifies Forge, distributes copies, crosses entity boundaries or gives users remote network access, the analysis changes; document the facts and obtain legal review.
Can I keep my private Forge modifications private?
Section 2 permits making and running covered works you do not convey. A modified remotely interactive version engages section 13, and transferring copies outside the relevant legal entity can engage distribution duties.
Do I have to publish source when I host unmodified Forge?
Section 13 is written around a modified version. Hosting facts can still involve notices, third-party components, user access and other law, so this page does not issue a blanket compliance clearance for an unmodified service.
What happens if I host a modified Forge UI online?
All users interacting remotely with that modified version must be prominently offered an opportunity to receive its Corresponding Source from a network server at no charge.
Does LAN access count as remote network interaction?
Section 13 says interaction remotely through a computer network and does not limit itself to the public internet. Whether a particular user and organizational arrangement triggers duties is fact-specific.
Is a GitHub link enough for the AGPL source offer?
A link can be the delivery mechanism only if it is prominent, available to every relevant user, free of charge and points to Corresponding Source for the exact deployed version. A generic upstream repository is not the source of your unpublished modifications.
Can I provide only a patch file for my modified Forge server?
Do not assume that is sufficient. Corresponding Source is defined as the preferred form for modification and includes source and scripts needed to generate, install and run the object code.
Can I redistribute the official Forge archive unchanged?
The AGPL permits conveying verbatim copies subject to notice and license conditions. If you distribute non-source form, section 6 source-delivery requirements apply. Linking users to the original GitHub release avoids becoming an unofficial binary mirror.
Can I distribute my modified Forge as a closed-source application?
A covered modified version conveyed to others must follow AGPL terms, and modified network service users receive the section 13 source opportunity. Whether other components form one covered work or a separate aggregate is a legal question this page cannot decide.
Can I charge for a Forge download?
Section 4 allows any price or no price for copies and paid support or warranty. Recipients still receive the license rights, and your source and notice obligations remain.
May I remove the AUTOMATIC1111 copyright line or license file?
Do not remove required notices. Section 4 requires keeping applicable copyright, license and no-warranty notices intact when conveying verbatim source; modified versions add their own prominent change notices.
Can I rename or rebrand my Forge fork?
The code license does not automatically grant trademark or endorsement rights. Renaming also does not remove AGPL duties or the requirement to state modifications and dates. Review branding separately.
Are built-in Forge extensions all covered only by the root AGPL?
The audited checkout contains 27 files named LICENSE or LICENSE.txt and a UI notice page with seven borrowed-code entries. Several built-ins and packages carry GPL, MIT, Apache or AGPL texts. Inventory the exact files you ship.
Does the Forge license cover checkpoints, LoRAs or VAEs?
No such blanket conclusion follows from the repository license. Those assets are normally obtained separately and carry their own terms or model cards.
Does the Forge license cover third-party extensions?
No blanket conclusion follows. Each extension is separate code at a separate repository and revision, and may also call an online service or download separately licensed assets.
Where is license information shown inside Forge?
At the inspected commit, Settings includes a Licenses tab populated from `html/licenses.html`. That page lists borrowed-code notices; it does not replace the root license or every nested LICENSE file.
What source version should a hosted modified Forge publish?
The source offer should correspond to the version users actually interact with, including your modifications and required build/install/run scripts. Record the full commit rather than only a branch name.
What should I give a lawyer or compliance reviewer?
Provide the exact repository commit, distribution artifact, diff, deployment architecture, user groups, source-offer path, dependency and asset inventory, model/extension licenses, contracts, jurisdictions and proposed branding.
